Before they need to enter the worlds marketplace,

I feel that children should be prepared.

When I was in high school we read A Modest Proposal in English class. I'm a faster reader than most I guess, because I was the first to start laughing. I mean, it was a bitter, sorta sick laugh, and I knew that he wasn't serious for a moment. A bit later the rest of the class started gasping in horror.

I read it in college--I had the same experience, being a fast reader! laugh

...to further this bad joke...

---------------------------------------------------

"I like children; they are a pleasure any time of the day. To see them, to hold them is all one could ask for. Oh yes, children should be prepared and enjoyed and relished. How would we treat this with the most respect? Each one requires time and attention, and greatest care."

...and the correct temperature.

I also read it in Highschool. We were told beforehand it was satire.

Half of the class still didn't understand it wasn't meant to be taken "as-is", so I got to spend hours violent defending it as-written before the teacher popped up to explain what satire was.

A bit on the marketplace, FCS (Family and Consumer Sciences) funding is being cut in place of the more general mathematics. Traditionally this department taught "practical math", such as how to balance a chequebook or read a bank statement. (Incidentally, the first time I got a bank statement it took me a good hour to figure it out!)

I don't want to preach fire and brimstone but what if, say, we focused less on algebra and more on how to figure out how much you will be paying out in interest.
