and the downloads links works too if you want them... yes

I am glad you like it !
I found the template at free place and It was easy to change to my own liking and purpose.

Speaking of sites... I can't get in to Simarillion... I wanted some male meshes but I now I can't get them.

Aponee told me that she was having trouble with the link in the challenge, but it works for me.

The main page of Simarillion doesn't, though, even when I try from the Winter page.

Perhaps MJ is working on her site.

I wish. That computer's still buried. It was down because it was time for the hosting service to be re-upped, and they forgot to renew the domain name, too. Oops. Fortunately, no domain squatter grabbed the name to hold it hostage (the silly things people do). It's back up now. And a good thing you folks mentioned it; I might not have noticed for several days. :)

Don't say that! It's enough to give a boy nightmares.

Glad it's back up. thumbsup

Well, I can't figure out layers in The Gimp. I've opened my ninth new file now and I'm trying and trying, but I get lost when it comes down to appying the shading layer... <sigh>

Does any of you know how The Gimp works? Is there a tutorial somewhere? Google didn't come up with anything helpful at all... :(

Well, I have tried fiddling for an hour but I am stumped...
I don't have a clue how to set the layers so they work as in PSP7, in the Gimp program... grr...anoying.

Thank you for trying, Susanne. It's been driving me nuts for ages. I can do simple stuff with Gimp, and I could probably do the skin without the shading layer, but it would look like the lady was dressed in cardboard. :(

I wish I had PSP for my Mac, but I just can't afford to pay that much money just for making skins for a game. laugh

Layers in Gimp confuse me - one problem is that the layer that is selected doesn't always seem to be the one that you *see*, so you end up 'selecting by colour' on another layer than what you *think* is the active one... if that makes sense at all?

I can do without the preview option, just doing a 'preview' in my head... But I do need to figure out this layer thing... <sigh>

Anyway, thanks again for trying. It makes me feel slightly better that I'm not the only one who has trouble with this Gimp thing... laugh

AnnetteBrooks wrote the Gimp part of the massive comparison we did for the big 3 graphics program. She may not have time these days to read all the threads, but try sending her a pm if you have specific questions.

Here are some links to tutorials:
http://www.tankedup-imaging.com/gimp/layers.html

http://www.designyourownweb.com/gimp/using-layers-gimp.htm

http://carol.gimp.org/gimp/tutorials/basics/layers.html

I skipped the ones from the official site. They all seem to have been written by professional artists, and insist on talking about masks as well as layers. Masks are very useful tools, but unless gimp is severely different from PSP in the way layers work, then you can learn just layers to start with, and learn masks later.

I watched two of the tutorial videos, and I *think* I'm getting somewhere. It's much more complicated than PSP, if you ask me (but maybe it's just a matter of what you're used to?)

I tried the tutorial again and actually came up with something like a 'winter peasant' (no way fine enough for a lady...) LOL!!!

It's really difficult to keep track of what layer is 'active' in Gimp, I keep selecting and adding stuff in the wrong layer... :(

Now I want to know how to import new textures in Gimp... Off to read some more tutorials... :)
