Winter making you feel dreary? Do what bruja did, and run away to sunny Mexico!

Bruja has rented a casita (little house) in the foothills distantly surrounding the city of Oaxaca.

The flat areas and lower slopes have tiny farms, some very rustic. The higher, steeper slopes, useless for agriculture, have marvelous views, so lots of artists, writers, and retired people, both Oaxacan and foreign, have built homes here.

Almost all the houses are adobe or plastered cement block, most white, but some bright or pale pink or yellow. Many of the columns are red brick from the local clay.

The house design almost always incorporates courtyards, patios, and roofed outdoor living areas, since the climate is warm and the sun shines almost every day. The walls are bright with climbing bougainvillea and other flowering vines. The patios are decorated with an amazing variety of plants in pots. Small gardens of drought resistant plants surround outdoor staircases.

So build a house or a little farm, and join bruja in sunny Oaxaca (wah-haw-ka). Googling for images will help you see the vibrant colour and get a feeling for life in the perpetual sun. (Try an advanced image search, since you don't want pictures of the colonial city, which has the same name as the state. I got some good results using [oaxaca x rural - city].

Just one thing to remember: It's far too dry in Oaxaca for grass as the Sims know it. So find a way to keep your ground areas from being a bright emerald green. laugh

We'd love to see your addition to the Simblesse Oblige Oaxaca neighboourhood, so take lots of screenshots.

As a courtesy to our members on dial-up, post a small jpg here, and give us a link to the hosting service, like Photobucket, where we can delight in your vision of life in the sun!

All participants will get this Frida Kahlo Easel - it has 5 paintings, usable only by adults, will pay out magic coins if the user knows magic and also has various artistic visions that will randomly spawn and waft around while the sim is painting.

Oooh, coffeeblonde3, I can't wait to see what you come up with.

I'm very tempted to try this myself, though I'm trying (though not succeeding) to keep my 'test' game small and not fill it up with downloads. Oh well.

At the very least, googling Oaxaca last night led me to scads and scads of pictures of the wonderful wood carvings from the area, the alebrijes, which are providing me with much inspiration.

Oh! I wanna do this! And now after months of doing nothing all of a sudden I have two things to build in Second Life, a family for Sims 2 to make for someone, houses to build... why does everything happen all at once?

:) great idea, will give it a whirl :)
