This method is for PC users. Mac users may be able to do a similar method using IffSnooper

To remove extra bmps from your iff file and reduce the file size all you need is IffPencil2(available here) and your object iffs.

The iff file cannot be Read Only because you want to make changes to it. nono

This is strictly for Sims iff files that have custom thumbnails already. If yours doesn't, check out this tutorial here.

The first time you do this:

Right click on the iff file. A Menu Window will pop up.

(Your iff file will look different from the one in the picture.)

A new menu window will pop up.

Select Choose Program...
A new window will pop up.

Scroll to where it says IFF Pencil 2 The Sims Editor and select it, then go down and check the box by Always use the selected program to open this kind of file, and then go down and click the Okay button.

All your iff files will magically turn into the cyan iff icon you saw in the first picture.

(Once you have set Iff Pencil 2 as the default program to open a iff file, the next time all you will have to do is double click on the iff file.)

This will open your object with Iff Pencil 2 in a window that looks something like this.

Up at the top you will see the name of the file in brackets [ ].
In the window pane on the left side you will see a list of resources:
BCON, BHAV, BMP_, CTSS, and so forth.

Click on the CTSS in the left window.
The window on the right changed, now showing the CTSS resources. It is probably just one line like this.

Make a note of the number. In my picture it is 2010.

Now click on BMP_ in the left window.
The window on the right now shows all the BMP_ resources.

The only bmp you want is the one that has the same number as the CTSS resource. The others are all unnecessary bloat that you can delete and thereby reduce the file size.
You can right click on each line (EXCEPT the one that has the same number as the CTSS resource) which will cause a menu window to pop up.

Select Delete. You will get a Warning Window asking if you really want to delete the selected items? Click the Yes button.

(If there is not a line with the same number as the CTSS resource, you can make you own thumbnail by following this tutorial here. It is a little more involved but quite simple once you have done it a few times. )

You can select more than one line at a time by holding down the left mouse button and dragging a box around the ones you want. You can hold down the Shift key to add to the highlighted lists.

Once you have deleted all the bmps EXCEPT the one that has the same number as the CTSS resource, you can save by clicking on the little floppy disc icon in the upper left corner, or by closing the file in which case a message will pop up asking if you want to keep the changes. Click the Yes button.

If you accidentally delete the line you don't want to, you can close the file WITHOUT saving and start over.

The file I used for this example went down from 539 KB to 416 KB, saving over 123 KB. Imagine how much space you can get from pruning all your custom objects. thumbsup

The original site is currently offline but TSR still has a workable download link in its well-hidden programs section.

http://www.thesimsresource.com/programs/index.php

(Guess what clean up task I'll be doing as soon as I get some time off! except I just pulled another contract today and need to make dough while the sun shines.)

I added a link in the first post, Patos, to another place you can download it from if you are not a TSR member.

Hmmm, if I got this right - and it doesn't even seem like a very complicated task, perhaps only time consuming - by eliminating those unnecessary bmp's I can reduce the total file size, AND if doing so I can add more files in the end?

Removing these bmp's will not effect the view or anything using for instance Object Managers, Sim Explorer or anything, will it?

If not, than I'd say it's well worth the time consuming part! yes

Right, as long as you keep the bmp that matches the CTSS number.

It's something you can do when you are adding files, it just takes a about 10 seconds per file once you are used to doing it. thumbsup

excellent tutorial Mtaman! And so timely too given everyone's been complaining about hitting the ceiling.

I have one question: what is a TroldenOgFuglene? biggrin

A four tile join-able painting I made for a request at the Coconut Hut. Trolden og fuglene roughly translates to Troll and Birds.
If I remember correctly he is a Norwegian artist.

Asger Jorn
Trolden og fuglene. 1944
