A brief outline of how to make Thumbnails

This is a brief outline which will give you the instructions on how to add a thumbnail to an object so it shows up correctly in organizing programs like Sim Categoriser or Sim Object Manager. The tutorial was originally written as a more detailed guide, and is available for download as an attachment in rich text format, as 1600 words is too long to post in a forum! I also hope making it available as a document to download will make it easier for people to refer to when they actually give it a go. I include in the longer guide instructions on how to make thumbnails in MS Paint, because not everyone has PaintShopPro or Photoshop, and have made the steps very clear so that anyone who has never used IffPencil will be able to follow it. The level of knowledge needed for the graphics program is fairly basic, ie you will need to know where the marquee tool and magic wand tools are, how to save it as a bmp, and maybe how to resize an image and use the sharpen tool. If you can do those, you'll have no trouble.

You will need the following programs:
Sim Camera
Iffpencil2
Both are available for free from TSR, here: http://www.thesimsresource.com/programs/index.php

Either a graphics program like Photoshop, PaintshopPro or Gimp.
- or use MS Paint (see attachment for instructions).

You may also need Transmogrifier, available here:
http://www.lushcreations.com/

Mac users have IffSnooper, which replaces Transmogrifier and IffPencil2.
Available here: http://homepage.mac.com/petergould/IFFS/IFFSnooper.html

Please also remember to download the thumbnail template.

Making the Thumbnails

1.In the game, take screenshots of the buy mode showing the specific objects in the buy menu.

2. In the graphic program cut out the image with marquee tool. Paste into thumbnail template. Delete blue background around image, duplicate it and position both in the centre of the 2 squares. Save in Index mode (Photoshop) or 256 Colours (8 bit) PaintShopPro. Put all thumbs in same folder as your object files so you can find them easily when using IffPencil.

3. In Iffpencil2, find object, open up the OBJD resource by double clicking on OBJD, then double clicking on the line that corresponds to the whole object if it’s a multi-tiled object or else the single line (if it’s a 1 tile object). Find the Catalog ID# and note it down. Open the BMP_ resource, right click on the right panel and select Import function, leaving the default import option “ Import one or more ‘data-only’ files” as it is. Find the bmp, click ok, then identify it as a BMP_, type in the ID number (taken from the Catalog ID# you just looked up) and naming it as “Catalog” – spelt exactly like that.

4. If there is no BMP_ resource in the object to begin with, simply double click on All Resources, then right click anywhere in the white background of the right hand panel and Import the bmp as above. Save file in Iffpencil and your new thumbnail is done.

4. Warning: Further changes to the sprites of the object and importing in Tmog again will strip out the new bmp, so make it the last thing you do to the iff file.

5. Tip: The image viewed in Tmog can also be used to make the thumbnail – take a screenshot, cut out the image and resize it to fit on the template. Useful for when the buy menu image is an unsuitable. When resizing an image do not clean it up and sharpen it too much. It needs to be blurry.

Another way of getting the catalog number is to look at the CTSS resource. It uses the catalog number as it's id number just like the BMP_ does.

You need to delete the blue background only for the right side, the left side is perfectly fine as it is the same color blue, the right side is the lighter blue.
